Managed to get my slack ass out this lunchtime for a 8k run. The weather looked a lot warmer than it was and I couldn't believe how windy it was! The run was ok and it didn't hurt as much as I was dreading it would. Hopefully it won't be long before I'm back up to speed.

Garmin Forerunner 301
Last September I treated myself to a Garmin 301 GPS and heart rate unit, up until that point the only piece of digital running equipment that I owned was a dodgy old watch, with a basic stopwatch functions. Run lengths were guest-mated with the calculation that I normally run about 8.5 minute miles, so a 16 minute run was 2 miles etc.
When the Garmin came I had a wake up call! What I thought was about a 5 mile course was really 4.2 :-/ and to insult to injury it shows you exactly what your heart was up to and also how slow your pace really was.
Is it any good? No - its brilliant. I wear it every time I run now. Plugging it in to my Pc when I get back from a run to download my run information to the “training center” software that came with the unit. It shows you a map of your route, maps this with other info like heart rate, distance covered, calories spent and time. J Also when it is plugged in to the pc via the USB cable it charges the wrist unit (which lasts for around 13 hours at a go, but I'm not about to run for 13 hours to test this).
The only thing I would change is the time it takes to locate satellites, I’m often stood waving my arm around trying to find a signal, if this doesn’t look mad enough I also for some reason cant help looking up?
All in all its great, and I’m really glad that I brought one - trouble is the new models are out now and they look even better…

Around the block
Went for a slow mile and a half yesterday (Saturday), starting to feel a bit better - hopefully I will be back up to running 5 times next week.

To comment or not to comment
I don’t know if it is just me or does anyone else have a fear of commenting on other peoples blogs? I read lots of blogs and visit them daily to catch up with their latest entries, but very rarely have ever posted a comment.
I think it is a cross between worrying that my written English is probably not my greatest asset and the fact that as I’ve typed in a comment and re-read it before clicking “post” it suddenly looks like a lame response.
So a public apology to everyone who has taken time to blog interesting reads - and I promise that in future I will click the “post” button more often.

Boy That Hurt!
Well after a slow drive home in the rain, I thought that it was time to bite the bullet and go for a run. I haven't run since the 10k cross country that helped keep my cold and sore throat.
I am still not 100% over it, but couldn't stand the thought of my fitness slipping further away than it already has.I arrived home in the pitch black, slipped my new trainers on my feet and headed out. The night rain was freezing as I headed up the lane. To be truthful I was glad that not to many people were out walking around the village tonight, as I sounded like Darth Vader!
I stumbled my way around my 2.5k lap, and was pleasantly surprised when I finally got in to check my time...11min 15sec :-) happy with that! even though my lungs are still burning.Come on tomorrow!

Welcome All and One
Welcome to the first post on my blog. :-P
Hopefully if all goes to plan I will be updating this blog every time that I’ve had a run. I aim to use it as a guide to my fitness and also as a motivation tool for up and coming races.
Watch out for some "backblogs" about how I got into running, kit reviews, some nice photos etc :-)
Anyways Cheers for now
